Arata and Atsuko Anzai Exhibition

Gallery tete will begin on Wednesday, April 22, with a solo exhibition by ceramic artists Anzai Shin and Anzai Atsuko.

The Anzai couple’s creative style is grounded in a distinctive harmony. They not only employ techniques such as mould and wheel-throwing —the process is then shaped by the two of them working together, breathing life into each piece. While they respect each other’s domains, their work also overlaps and intertwines at a subtle boundary—this is the result of "阿吽の呼吸- Aun no Kokyu" (the breath of perfect synchronization) that only long-time partners can cultivate. Rather than erasing individual signatures, they allow both sensibilities to gently blend in silence, giving rise to a depth that is truly one of a kind, possible only through their shared dialogue.

Although their work draws on forms and aesthetics found throughout the ancient and the modern, the reason it feels somehow “effortless ” is that they value "余白- Yohaku"(the sense of space and interval)—a quality that softens the maker’s assertions and, in everyday life, resonates with the people who use the pieces. For that reason, these objects are not merely expressions of artistic intent; they feel like something that makes room for the rhythm of daily living.

In Japanese aesthetics, this is known as "用の美- Yō-no-bi" (the beauty of use) —beauty that is only fully realized through being lived with, used, and experienced. Even amid the lively bustle of a city like Hong Kong, the couple’s ceramics function like quiet punctuation: playing an essential, understated role, and flexibly harmonizing with the everyday lives of those who hold and use them.

In this exhibition, you are invited to see their core themes—‘tableware for everyday’ and ‘tools for living’ and also yaki (wild firing) objects, which carry the raw, untamed spirit of the earth itself. We warmly welcome you to experience their calm yet deeply felt creative energy for this moment.
